Solving problems and reducing risk behind complex projects through the use of innovative systems engineering
Transforming systems engineering by:
- Fully understanding highly complex systems (involving people, processes and technology) in order to predict and control their behaviour
- Applying innovative systems thinking and knowledge to provide effective solutions to extremely difficult and intractable system problems
The Research School of Systems Engineering forms the heart of Systems Engineering @ Loughborough by undertaking internationally leading systems research. Loughborough University has a long established international reputation in systems engineering spanning more than two decades. Our research has high impact and has built on firm foundations involving partnerships within a wide range of domains including: aerospace, automotive, communications, construction, defence, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, organisational transformation, pharmaceutical and transport. The important characteristic of these domains is that they increasingly rely on complex systems to deliver the functionality demanded today.
The Research School of Systems Engineering spans the whole University and the Systems Engineering Innovation Centre to:
- Provide a leading world class environment in order to encourage and foster interdisciplinary research in the systems engineering domain
- Promote and enable the growth of interdisciplinary working in systems engineering across the boundaries between single disciplines, departments, and faculties
- Enable integrated strategy development for interdisciplinary working in systems engineering and coordinate the execution of the strategy
- Provide a supportive environment for researchers across the University and partner organisations who specialise in systems engineering
- Manage the research pipeline particularly to encourage and deliver significant research initiatives where the opportunity requires alliances either across Departments within the University or with key external collaborators
- Create and encourage a community within the University
- Establish and grow a new capability in the systems engineering area
A centre of excellence for Systems Engineering known as the Systems Engineering Innovation Centre (SEIC) has been established in areas of research and technology development, teaching and training. The SEIC at Loughborough, focuses on systems engineering aspects which provide a framework for the integration of people, processes, tools and technology in order to improve the management of risk, product configuration and technology insertion for the development of innovative products. An important element is the ability to transfer low TRL (Technology Readiness Level) research through the middle TRLs into highly beneficial higer TRLs.
Underpinned by funding from the East Midlands Development Agency (emda), BAE SYSTEMS and Loughborough University are collaborating in this exciting venture and have created a unique resource for Systems Engineering in the UK with global implications for most sectors of industry and academia. Other world class companies are engaging with us to be part of this exciting enterprise.
Loughborough University was awarded its first Queens Anniversary Award Prize in 1994 for
Partnership with the Aerospace and other Industries.

The Research School of Systems Engineering was established by Loughborough University and has been co-supported by an EPSRC Bridging the Gap Award - EP/E018521/1 - Bridging the Gap -Enabling a strategic and long lasting alliance between academic research staff at Loughborough University |
